I'm in the process of converting from 15 wide track to 10.6
It involves modifying the rear skid and drive shaft for use with the narrow track.
I removed the following parts.
secondary clutch
Speedo drive
chain case cover
chain and gears
lower bearing
rear skid
drive shaft
track
Then I pressed off the outer drive cogs, because they are not used with the narrow track.
At this time I decided to run 10 tooth drivers so I pressed off all 4 drive cogs and installed 2 larger 10 tooth drive cogs in the center of the shaft in the stock location. Be sure to mark the location of the original cogs to make installing the new one's easier.
I then remounted the rear idler wheels on the skid. I went from 4 rear wheels to 2 wheels in the center. All I had to do is remove 2 wheels and remake the spacers to locate the 2 wheels into the center. I also moved the adjusters to the inside.
Depending on what skid your working with you will also have to remove all the wheels that run on the outside of the rails.
The biggest modification you will have to do is remount the wheels on the rear arm to the center. My sled is a Arctic cat so these instructions apply. Other sled's would need remounted also but would be done a different way.
remove the rear arm
remove wheels and bearings
remove springs
machine shaft to allow bearing to slide all the way on
make spacers to locate wheels in the center
install wheels and bearings using lock collars
install springs
install modified arm back on skid
I machined my rear arm at work on the lathe. You will need a very big lathe to do it because your spinning the entire arm and it could be very dangerous. I'm sure there are other way's to do it so use what you have available.
After i mounted the all the wheels and arm back on the skid I test fitted the track to make sure none of the wheels hit the lugs.
